About the Author

Elizabeth C. Mansfield  is Vice President for Scholarly Programs at the National Humanities Center in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina.  She  has taught art history at New York University and the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee . A scholar of modern European art and art historiography, her publications include books and articles on topics ranging from the origins of modernism to Picasso’s Demoiselles d’Avignon to the contemporary performance and body art of Orlan. Her 2007 book Too Beautiful to Picture : Zeus, Myth, and Mimesis was awarded the College Art Association’s Charles Rufus Morey book prize.

 

 

The late H.H. Arnason was a distinguished art historian, educator, and museum administrator who for many years was Vice President for Art Administration of the Solomon Guggenheim Museum in New York. He began his professional life in academia, teaching at Northwestern University, University of Chicago, and the University of Hawaii. From 1947 to 1961, Arnason was Professor and Chairman of the Department of Art at the University of Minnesota.

Excellent and interesting introduction to Modern Art with hundreds of photos

I saw this book in a museum (the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, GA) and had the chance to peruse the museum's copy (which was of the previous edition) before buying it. After just spending 15-20 minutes with it in the museum, I became convinced that it was worth the hefty price. Now, having purchased the most recent edition, I am glad I did. It is an expensive book, but worth the price, in my opinion, as it contains a wealth of information and a wealth of art.

The book was originally written by H.H. Arnason, who, as the book's Preface explains, was Professor and Chairman of the University of Minnesota's Art Department from 1947 to 1961. He also held other posts and was affiliated with the Guggenheim Museum. Since Arnason passed away some time ago, recent editions of the book have been updated by Elizabeth C. Mansfield (Associate Professor of Art at NYU), who has brought the book up to the present (as recent as 2006) with sections on globalization and postcolonial theory.

Both Arnason and Mansfield are clearly intelligent scholars who place the art within its historical context to help us to see what it did, where the innovations were, and what conflicts and issues were live at that time. For example, the opening chapter deals with the legal case between Ruskin and Whistler, in which Whistler sued Ruskin for libel when Ruskin defamed Whistler's painting "Nocturne in Black and Gold." The battle was over whether Whistler could charge such a large amount of money for something that, in Ruskin's eyes, was not art. The (his)story is told in a very readable way, with the painting shown, and it is a perfect and intelligent way to open the book, since a crucial issue involved in modern art is, what makes it art and who decides?

I have not had time to work my way through the whole book (it is 830 pages), but I have liked very much what I have read so far. The index is handy for finding the artists one is interested in, if you don't want to wade through the book, since the chapters are organized thematically. The book may be intended for College textbook use, but I think it is definitely interesting enough to be read by anyone interested in art and painting. It's probably a bit too large and intimidating to work well as a real "introductory" book for someone who knows nothing about art or modern art (unless you have a seriously scholarly mind), but otherwise, I think it is as accessible as it can be given its size and scope, it makes for some great reading and it also passes as a good reference work. I recommend it.

An excellent source of 20th century artists

I bought this book for a class and it has certainly come in handy. It covers a large selection of 20th century artists such as Klimt, Kandinsky, Cezanne, Matisse, Demuth, and much much more. The book is very large (has a lot of pages) so it truly is stock full of pictures and information about artists and art movements of this time period. There does seem to be a focus more on European artists but there are still pleanty of American artists as well as other countries (Japan, Mexico...)being represented. Although it may be a little expensive, it is a great book for anyone who wants a well organized compilation of 20th century art. I also like the way it is written. It is easy to understand but written in a sophisticated manner. It also discusses a wide variety of art including oil, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, mixed media, photography, performance art, and more.

I used the Sixth Edition in an art history class where the current Seventh Edition was the designated text. There was very little difference between the two--like a small change in the numbering of the chapters. I saved probably more than $100 by using the earlier text. The book had been used, but was in very good condition. And it's a keeper which I will no doubt refer to in the future.

About the Author

Laura E. Berk is a distinguished professor of psychology at Illinois State University, where she has taught human development to both undergraduate and graduate students for more than three decades. She received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of California, Berkeley, and her master’s and doctoral degrees in child development and educational psychology from the University of Chicago.  She has been a visiting scholar at Cornell University, UCLA, Stanford University, and the University of South Australia.

 

    Berk has published widely on the effects of school environments on children’s development, the development of private speech, and the role of make-believe play in development. Her research has been funded by the U.S. Office of Education and the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. It has appeared in many prominent journals, including Child Development, Developmental Psychology, Merrill-Palmer Quarterly, Journal of Abnormal Child Psychology, Development and Psychopathology, and Early Childhood Research Quarterly. Her empirical studies have attracted the attention of the general public, leading to contributions to Psychology Today and Scientific American.  She has also been featured on National Public Radio’s Morning Edition and in Parents Magazine, Wondertime, and Reader’s Digest.

 

    Berk has served as a research editor for Young Children and a consulting editor for Early Childhood Research Quarterly. Currently, she is an associate editor for the Journal of Cognitive Education and Psychology. She is a frequent contributor to edited volumes on early childhood development, having recently authored chapters on the importance of parenting, on make-believe play and self-regulation, and on the kindergarten child. She has also written the article on social development for The Child: An Encyclopedic Companion; the article on Vygotsky for the Encyclopedia of Cognitive Science; and the chapter on storytelling as a teaching strategy for Voices of Experience: Memorable Talks from the National Institute on the Teaching of Psychology (Association for Psychological Science).  She is the coauthor of the forthcoming chapter on make-believe play and self-regulation in the Sage Handbook of Play in Early Childhood.

 

    Berk’s books include Private Speech: From Social Interaction to Self-Regulation; Scaffolding Children’s Learning: Vygotsky and Early Childhood Education; Landscapes of Development: An Anthology of Readings; and A Mandate for Playful Learning in Preschool: Presenting the Evidence. In addition to Exploring Lifespan Development, she is author of the best-selling texts Child Development and Infants, Children, and Adolescents, and Development Through the Lifespan published by Pearson. Her book for parents and teachers is Awakening Children’s Minds: How Parents and Teachers Can Make a Difference.

 

    Berk is active in work for children’s causes. In addition to service in her home community, she is a member of the national board of directors and chair of the Chicago advisory board of Jumpstart, a nonprofit organization that provides intensive literacy intervention to thousands of low-income preschoolers across the United States, using college and university students as interveners. Berk is a fellow of the American Psychological Association, Division 7: Developmental Psychology.

Save money!

I ordered the fifth edition to save money (before asking my professor if it was acceptable). Then, my professor suggested to buy this new version, so I did. I compared the 5th and 6th edition. So far, the only things I have noticed were: different pictures, a few statistic numbers changed (not much), and a few different citations. The publisher says there are about 2,000 new citations, but they just changed the names and have the exact same words, so it does not make a difference. Pictures may have changed, but the captions are almost exactly the same in both editions. So if you don't mind a few, different statistic numbers and would like to save money, get the fifth edition. I am now going to return the new edition.

Very Informative!

This is a very interesting book and definitely a must read. It's broke down into many categories so you can find what you are looking for right from the get go instead of reading through the entire thing to find what you are looking for. I love that there is a nice section on the benefits of essential oils, which a lot of people over look when they are searching home remedies.
This book is perfect for those late nights or last resort situations when you need a remedy to get you through until you can make it to the doctor or if you just prefer to treat your ailment naturally. many of these I have heard of before but there were also ones that I had never heard of or thought of. It's a convenient book to have around, especially if you have children!

Great content. Read Aloud not possible on iPad

Love the book content but how do I get it [print replica] to read aloud? Other books that are not print replicas will read aloud on my iPad but this book will not. Is there an app or does in need to be in a different file format?

About the Author

Steven A. Beebe is serving in his 28th year as Chair, of the Department of Communication Studies at
Texas State University. He is Regents’ and University Distinguished Professor of Communication Studies. He also served as Associate Dean of College of Fine Arts and Communication for 25 years. Steve is an author and co-author of twelve books (with multiple editions totaling more than 65 books), more than 50 articles and book chapters, as well as over 150 papers and presentations at professional conferences. Steve’s communication books have been used at hundreds of colleges and universities throughout the world making him one of the top communication textbook authors in the United States. Steve is President of the National Communication Association (NCA), the largest professional communication association in the world.

 

Susan J. Beebe has been on the faculty of the Department of English at Texas State University-San Marcos since 1988.  As Director of Lower-Division Studies in English, she directs the first-year writing and sophomore literature programs and helps to train and mentor some 60 graduate teaching assistants annually. Sue’s professional interests and expertise encompass both oral and written communication.  She has co-authored with Steven Beebe several communication textbooks used at more than a thousand universities worldwide.  In addition, she has published articles, conference papers, and teaching materials in both English and communication studies.

Public Speaking plain and simple

This book laid out all the expectations for giving a speech. It was easy to read and to understand. If you have not a clue on how to give a speech, this book will guide you with the How To. I also liked the examples provided, they help a lot.

Buying the Kindle version, I now have access to it on my MacBook Pro, iPad, and iPhone. Simple using the highlight features, note taking, and whatever else you could use it for. Stored in my iCloud so I can access it everywhere. $41.75 well spent, and not have to worry about the paper ripping or having to carry around another paperweight.

This book is over rated and over priced for what you get.
Has some serious book to web site issues to work out.
The content of the book did not coincide with the Bebe web site.
Quizzes often didn't match up to the chapter in the book, was very frustrating.
Fix the glitches and this could be a great book and resource.
