Decent book, don't expect coverage of film processes
By Felonius
The book is decent, if a bit pricy. It covers a lot of topics, with a good coverage of those topics. They don't go into a lot of depth on every topic, but they cover it with enough detail that you should be able to get a basic understanding. What they don't cover in the physical book is film processes. Anything that's the same between film and digital (exposure, composition, etc.) is in the book, and there's coverage of digital only topics (image editing, printing, etc.), but the sections on "Developing in a Darkroom, Color: Film and Darkroom, View Camera, and The Zone System" have all been moved to the eText (which I'm about to address).

I purchased the book with the "MyArtsLab with eText" option, thinking that I may get a little more out of the book through self-study. At the time of purchase, I didn't know that the eText was *required* if you intend to use anything film only. Also, the intro to the book indicates that "Purchase of the paper book gives you full access to the eText..." This, so far, seems to be incorrect.

After contacting Pearson's (the publisher) technical support, they're telling me that the only way to access the MyArtsLab and eText is to have a "CourseID", which you can only get if you're taking a class from a school. My issue is still "open", and someone is supposed to get back to me, so I'm not holding on to hope here.

Supposedly, the content on film processes exist in older versions of the book, though I don't have one handy to compare. As it stands, this book is probably worth 4 Stars on its own, ignoring price, and if you don't need anything about film. The MyArtsLab content and eText being available only to people enrolled in a class costs the book one star, and the film being available only in the eText costs it another.

Description is NOT ACCURATE and hidden content is NOT available! Do not buy this edition!
By I_Veridicus
Please also check out the review posted on March 18, 2013 by "Felonius". His review is spot on, and the issue has not been resolved as of July 21st. There is no excuse for such a delay on Amazon's part! The description clearly states that purchase of the book gives full access to additional material: "This edition presents all facets of photography, laying out what you need to know to make photographs with digital tools as well as the integral steps to perfecting film print. MyArtsLab is an integral part of the London/Upton/Stone program. Key learning applications include videos, simulations, and MediaShare."

This claim is false and clearly not the case, and is why my 3 star rating is reduced to a 1 star. I would give this edition a negative (-1) rating if such a rating were possible because of the misleading description and unavailabe content. If Amazon were to resolve the unavailable content issue, then my review would be rated a 3 star publication. I cannot recommend purchase of this book as the description is clearly misleading and inaccurate as of July 21st, 2013. I contacted a "Dan W." at Pearson and he said to contact the seller for a refund. (Dan W: "Unfortunately, you may have to see if you can return the book with the access code and just buy the book, I understand your frustration, however we cannot control how 3rd parties sell our content, the book and access code you have simply do not have a self study option available.")

Pearson and MyArtsLab should be avoided like poison, as there is absolutely NO excuse for such ambush marketing.

IF and when Amazon resolves this issue, I'll post an update. --V

BUYERS BE INFORMED - AMAZON'S DESCRIPTION INCOMPLETE AS OF MARCH 2014
By PT
Some of the material in this new 11th Edition is only available through an eText - in other words, it is NOT in the printed book.

The publisher has EXCLUDED sections in this new print edition that were included in previous editions. Sections on Developing a Negative; Printing in a Darkroom; Color: Film and Darkroom; View Camera; and The Zone System are NOT in the printed book. A Troubleshooting section for film and darkroom problems is also NOT in the printed book.

According to the printed book's Preface, this information has been moved out of the printed edition and is in only available in the eText version of the book. The Preface also states "purchase of the paper book gives you full access to the eText" (contains everything in the printed book plus those sections just described). THIS IS NOT THE CASE. AN ACCESS CODE IS REQUIRED.

Prior to the preface the publisher has included a page describing how to access the eText. Very simple description, very simple process, but once you actually go to their web site it NOT as described. Once arriving there, you learn an ACCESS CODE is required to view / use the eText. In addition, you learn a COURSE ID is also required.

After my contacting publisher via telephone, it is learned when they sell the printed book, they include the ACCESS CODE on a printed card that is set loosely inside the front or back cover and then the book is shrink-wrapped as a unit. They explain when the book goes out to third party sellers (AMAZON) they have no control over what happens to the card.

Apparently other reviewers have learned the ACCESS CODE is also unique to one person, i.e. t is not transferable to someone else should you decide to give / sell the book.

Also according to other reviews, the eText is NOT viewable on Apple products.

Lastly, some descriptions and emails from sellers indicate the book they sell is a "stand alone version". A more accurate description is does NOT include / EXCLUDES access to the eText.

BUYER BE INFORMED.
