About the Author
Jeffrey Jensen Arnett received his Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology from the University of Virginia. He taught at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, the University of Missouri, and the University of Maryland, where he is currently a Research Associate Professor in the Department of Human Development. He has also served as a Research Associate at the Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center in Chicago while a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Northwestern University Department of Psychiatry, where he also served on the Committee on Human Development at the University of Chicago. He is currently Editor of the Sage "Journal of Adolescent Research" and is Editor-in-Chief of a four-volume encyclopedia of adolescence currently being developed with Routledge. Within the area of developmental psychology and media, his primary interests include music and adolescence, and he's especially interested in a cultural and international perspective, which he would hope to infuse into the encyclopedia.

It's actually a great learning experience!

I recently bought this book for a class online. Comparing this book from the other two psychology books I have to read, this is by FAR the most interesting one. I love Jeffrey Arnett's point of view and research on adolescence. It always finish reading the chapters on time because it's not boring! It's a fun learning experience! I definitely recommend this book if you are taking a adolescent psychology course, and if the teacher demands for this book - you'll absolutely love it!

I really enjoyed reading this book for my adolescent psychology class. It was both informative and educational; the author adds some of her personal stories with her children. Lots of statistics and comparisons between adolescent development in the United States and other countries. Some statistics are quite shocking and will make you more aware of where we stand as a society.

Dr. Mark C. Gridley is the author of Jazz Styles: History and Analysis, America’s most widely used introduction to jazz. It emerged from the History and Styles of Jazz course that he had developed at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. Jazz Styles has been required for jazz history classes in more than 400 colleges and universities. The book has been translated into 5 foreign languages, and its influence and reference value led to Gridley’s listing in Who’s Who in America. A Cleveland-based jazz flutist-saxophonist-bandleader, Gridley has also conducted field research in Africa and the Caribbean. For his studies of jazz popularity, Gridley earned the Distinguished Achievement Award of the Educational Press Association of America. His articles on jazz styles and teaching jazz appreciation appear in the Grove Dictionaries of Music, Encyclopaedia Britannica, The Black Perspective in Music, Black Music Research Journal, The Musical Quarterly, The Instrumentalist, Current Musicology, College Music Symposium, Popular Music and Society, and Jazz Educator’s Journal. About the Author

D. Brendan Nagle is Professor of History Emeritus at the University of Southern California, where he had appointments in the departments of history and classics.  He was research associate at the American Academy in Rome and the American School of Classical Studies at Athens in 1970 and 1999.  From 1976 to 1983 he was chairman of USC’s History Department.  He is the author or coauthor of six books and has published over 50 articles and reviews in such journals as: American Historical Review, American Journal of Archaeology, Ancient History Bulletin, Athenaeum, Historia, Journal of American Ethnic History, Polis, L’Antiquité classique, Review of Metaphysics, Rheinisches Museum für Philologie, and Transactions of the American Philological Society.  He received USC’s Social Science Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1984.

Dull, sad, and uninspired

I usually love history, but somehow Nagle has managed to take the Greeks and Romans and make them BORING. My favorite period of history, and it's dry, dusty, and uninteresting when Nagle tells it. Unfortunately, my honors class decided this was the textbook we had to use.

On a more critical note professionally, I don't like history texts where the historian presents emotions rather than facts. There are numerous points throughout the book where Nagle says things like "Naturally, such and such made no sense" or where he errs more on the side of storytelling than being a historian. History should certainly tell a story, but it should be unfettered by the historian's personal opinions whenever possible, and not colored with emotional narrative.

About the Author
James M. Henslin was born in Minnesota, graduated from high school and junior college in California and from college in Indiana. Awarded scholarships, he earned his Master's and doctorate degrees in sociology at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. After this, he was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship from the National Institute of Mental Health, and spent a year studying how people adjust to the suicide of a family member. His primary interests in sociology are the sociology of everyday life, deviance, and international relations. He has published widely in sociology journals, including Social Problems and American Journal of Sociology. While a graduate student, Jim Henslin taught at the University of Missouri at St. Louis. After completing his doctorate, he joined the faculty at Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville, where he is Professor Emeritus of Sociology. He says, "I've always found the introductory course enjoyable to teach. I love to see students' faces light up when they first glimpse the sociological perspective and begin to see how society has become an essential part of how they view the world." Henslin enjoys reading and fishing. His two favorite activities are writing and traveling. He especially enjoys visiting and living in other cultures, for this brings him face to face with behaviors and ways of thinking that he cannot take for granted, experiences that "make sociological principles come alive."

The book was not in the very best condition, but I did order a used edition

I needed this book, "Essentials of Sociology," for my Sociology class in college. The book arrived in the mail in a very timely manner, it did not take long to arrive. The book, "Essential of Sociology," was actually somewhat interesting. The book was not in the very best condition, but I did order a used edition. The book was much cheaper here on Amazon than it was at my local college bookstore, or anywhere else I looked, for that matter. The book was a very fair price, and not way over priced! Although I did not find my Sociology class very interesting, I did find the book very interesting. Each chapter begins with a story from a personal experience had by the author, and the story relates to what we would learn in each chapter. The stories at the beginning of the chapter really brought the learning to life! The book also had pictures and experiences, making it much more personal.

About the Author

P eter N. Stearns is Provost and University Professor at George Mason University. He has taught previously at Harvard, the University of Chicago, Rutgers, and Carnegie Mellon; he was educated at Harvard University. He has published widely in modern social history, including the history of emotions, and in world history. Representative works in world history include World History: A Survey, The Industrial Revolution in World History, Gender in World History, Consumerism in World History>, Human Rights in World History, and Growing Up: The History of Childhood in Global Context. His publications in social history include Old Age in Preindustrial Society, Anxious Parents: A History of Modern American Childrearing, American Cool: Developing the Twentieth-Century Emotional Style, Fat History: Bodies and Beauty in Western Society, American Fear: The Causes and Consequences of High Anxiety, Revolutions in Sorrow: A History of American Experiences and Policies Toward Death in Global Context, From Alienation to Addiction: Modern American Work in Global Historical Perspective, Educating Global Citizens in Colleges and Universities: Challenges and Opportunities, and Satisfaction Not Guaranteed: Dilemmas of Progress in Modern Society. While under Dr. Stearns’s leadership, George Mason University was awarded the 2006 Andrew Heiskell Award for Innovation in International Education. He has also edited encyclopedias of world and social history, and since 1967, he has served as editor-in-chief of The Journal of Social History. In most of his research and writing, Dr. Stearns pursues three main goals. First, as a social historian, he is eager to explore aspects of the human experience that are not generally thought of in historical terms, and with attention to ordinary people as well as elites. Second, he seeks to use an understanding of historical change and continuity to explore patterns of behavior and social issues. Finally, he is concerned with connecting new historical research with wider audiences, including of course classrooms. Dr. Stearns is also eager to promote comparative analysis and the assessment of modern global forces—for their own sake and as they illuminate the American experience and impact.
