About the Author

Lynn Quitman Troyka, Adjunct Professor of English in the MA Program in Language and Literature at the City College (CCNY) of the City University of New York (CUNY), taught freshman English and basic writing for many years at Queensborough Community College. Dr. Troyka is a past chair of the Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC); the College Section of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE); and the Writing Division of the Modern Language Association (MLA). She has won many awards for teaching, scholarship, and service, and has conducted hundreds of faculty workshops about teaching writing and its relation to college-level reading.
“This information,” says Dr. Troyka, “tells what I’ve done, not who I am. I am a teacher. Teaching is my life’s work, and I love it.”

Doug Hesse is Professor of English and Executive Director of Writing at the University of Denver, one of only thirty writing programs to receive the CCCC Certificate of Excellence. Dr. Hesse is a past chair of the CCCC, the nation’s largest association of college writing instructors. A past president, as well, of the Council of Writing Program Administrators (WPA), Dr. Hesse edited WPA: Writing Program Administration. He has served on the NCTE executive committee, chaired the MLA Division on Teaching as a Profession, and served on the MLA Committee on Contingent Labor. Author of nearly sixty articles and book chapters, he has been named University Distinguished Scholar at the University of Denver.
“Of various awards I’ve received,” says Dr. Hesse, “the one that matters most is Distinguished Humanities Teacher. That one came from my students and suggests that, in however small a way, I’ve mattered in their education and lives.”

You Will Need This!!

This is by far one of the best text books I've had to get so far. I didn't get it right away, but then I caved after a couple semesters and I am REALLY glad that I did. I'm usually really great with essays, but when I get stumped, this book tells me exactly what I need to do to get it right. It tells you everything you need to know about writing any kind of essay, and has a GREAT section covering that pesky MLA formatting that is oh-so-popular these days. If you follow the guidelines in this book when you're working on essays, you're sure to make the grade!

was not the exact book. Did not include the new mycomputer lab as advertised. Kept the book and got dollars off the price due to the fact may have to buy another book / the correct one/ next semister.

About the Author

Isa Engleberg, Professor emerita at Prince George’s Community College in Largo, Maryland, served as president of the National Communication Association (NCA) in 2003 and chaired the NCA Research Board from 1995-1996. She has written six college textbooks in communication studies, published more than three dozen articles in academic journals, and made hundreds of convention and seminar presentations. Dr. Engleberg received the Outstanding Community College Educator Award from NCA and the President’s Medal from Prince George’s Community College for outstanding teaching, scholarship, and community service. She has focused her professional career on improving both the content and teaching of basic communication courses at all levels of higher education as well as studying, teaching, and consulting internationally.

Dianna Wynn is a faculty member at Nash Community College in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. Previously she taught at Midland College in Texas and Prince George’s Community College in Maryland, where she was chosen by students as the Outstanding Teacher of the Year. She has co-authored three communication textbooks and has written articles in academic journals. Professor Wynn served as an officer in the Community College Section and a member of the Legislative Assembly of the National Communication Association (NCA). In addition to teaching and college services, she worked as a trial consultant, assisting attorneys in developing effective communication strategies for the courtroom.

This is a horribly written and extremely biased book

This is a horribly written and extremely biased book. Only about 5 percent of the book is actually about improving your communications skills. The other 95 percent is all this garbage about being politically correct. For instance, it says calling a fireman a 'fireman' is offensive to men!! According to the book they should be called a 'fireperson'. I'm sorry, but this is completely irreverent to helping people communicate clearer. Avoid this book at all cost. Also, if you are in a comms class like mine, you won't even need the book. My prof isn't even using because it is soo bad. Thanks

Trashy book

Picked up my book looked through it and at the bottom of the pages they're ripped, as if some one was tearing bits of paper off the pages, now if I wanted a trashy looking book I would've ordered a trashy looking book, if I'm paying this amount for a book like this I want it to look pristine.

A good introductory text

A good introduction to the theoretical underpinnings of persuasion and the forms it can take, the types of people who are most susceptible to it, as well as its use in corporate language, advertising and PR. What I felt was missing was a roadmap of how one can be more influential in practical terms. That said, I still have a chapter or two left...

I had to read this book for a communications class at Regent University and it has been the most entertaining and informative textbooks I have yet to read. It's even one of the most entertaining books that I've read, PERIOD.

About the Author

Thomas R. Dye, Emeritus McKenzie Professor of Government at Florida State University, regularly taught large introductory classes in American politics and has served as president of the Southern Political Science Association, president of the Policy Studies Organization, and secretary of the American Political Science Association. He has taught at the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Wisconsin, and the University of Georgia, and served as a visiting scholar at Bar-Ilan University, Israel; the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C.; and elsewhere.

Ronald Keith Gaddie is Professor of Political Science at the University of Oklahoma, where he regularly teaches the American Federal Government course. He is former president of the Southwestern Political Science Association; he has also been retained by corporations, trade associations, state and local governments and by plaintiffs and defendants in election law and voting rights litigation. Keith is also an award-winning radio broadcaster at NPR radio station KGOU (Norman, OK).

As far as textbooks for classes goes, something about this just does not strike me right. It gives good information and provides good alternate view points, but something just didn't do it for me. Was it the language, the layouts, the examples? I do not honestly know. But as far as textbooks go....well it's just another average textbook. Nothing more, nothing less.

Great Book.

I love the layout of the book. I myself thought I knew a lot about politics until I read this book. It is a very good book for even the knowledge to read. I myself usually trade my books in for refund at my school, but I'm keeping this one for myself.

Really makes learning abot politics and the government very fun. I reallly enjoy doing the study assignments. I would order from the publisher again
