Easy to use and helpful for papers

I had to purchase this book to take a class for composition. My skills are definitely not in the writing side of life, but this book was easy to use. It helped me to put together essays, critiques, and other forms of writing to get me through not only that class, but others that require writing skills. Definitely recommended for those who need some guidance!

Strategies for Successful Writing

This is a book that you will use over and over again. I started using this book because it was a required textbook for a Writing Class that I just finished. The book talks about the purposes of writing, your audience for writing and qualities of writing. The book was especially helpful for planning and drafting your first essay. It shows you how to write using Illustration, Comparison, Cause and Effect and Arguments. It also gives you examples of these writing styles. At the end of each Chapter, you have discussion questions and suggestions for writing. It is full of possible topics for you to write essay's on.
A wonderful book full of ideas and resources.

Mandatory for my essay writing class

As an English professor at a local college, it is difficult to find a textbook that both engages and teaches students. "Strategies for Successful Writing" is among the better ones, and has been the textbook that I have required for my course. What I like about it is its common sense arrangement and style of writing. While it isn't dumbed-down or condescending to students, it avoids being too sophisticated. I also like the selections and sample essays for students to read. (I am always pleasantly surprised as to how individual classes respond differently to them. For example, my Spring 2011 class hated Amy Gross'"The Appeal of the Androgynous Man". My Fall 2012 class loved it.) My only complaint, and this is totally subjective, is that there may be TOO MUCH information or TOO MANY samples of essays. The book is huge and HEAVY. Students have moaned about carrying it around. (However, I have reminded them that this would not be an issue if they purchase the Kindle version.) In general, the text is fine, better than average for my purposes.
