It's actually a pretty good read.

You can tell that Eitzen is a Marxist. He approaches social problems as conflict theorist. The thing is that Eitzen doesn't tend offer actual solution, but I guess that up to our generation. All and all it's a good book easy to follow.

this one isn't too bad. I would like to see some of the ...

As far as textbooks go, this one isn't too bad. I would like to see some of the terminology regarding immigrants changed to more humanistic words however. I would also like to see perhaps some more citation to back up the author's views--I agree with most of them, however it is important to have them backed by peer-reviewed sources. It is extremely inconvenient that the ebook version of this doesn't work on Kindle e-readers or on Kindle cloud. You are stuck either downloading the Kindle viewer app or reading it on your phone, which is extremely inconvenient for a textbook. What I do like about this as an ebook is that it is a searchable text, which is great when you need to look things up. Open book test--this is the format to go with. Another thing that I would like to see changed by the publisher is the length of time that the text can be rented for as an ebook. I have 8 week courses, so I didn't need this for the length of time allowed in the rental but still had to pay the full amount.

About the Author
David Guth is an associate professor at the William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications, University of Kansas. Guth received a B.A. in Radio-Television-Speech from the University of Maryland (1973) and an MA in Journalism from the University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill (1990). He served associate dean of the school from July 2004 to July 2009 and as chair of the school's Strategic Communication track from January 2000 to August 2003. His areas of research interest are crisis communications, political communication, and community journalism. Prior to joining the faculty in August 1991, he served in several public information positions within the administration of North Carolina Governor Jim Martin. That included four years as the chief spokesman for the state's prison, probation, and parole systems. He was also a broadcast journalist in Kentucky, Indiana, Georgia, New York, and North Carolina and is a recipient of numerous reporting honors, including the prestigious Peabody Award. Media Guide for Attorneys, a book he coauthored in 1996, received the American Bar Association’s Partnership Award. He is the coauthor of Strategic Writing: Multimedia Writing for Public Relations, Advertising and More (undergoing revision for its fourth edition) and Adventures in Public Relations: Case Studies and Critical Thinking. Bridging the Chesapeake: A ‘Fool Idea’ That Unified Maryland (Old Line Publishing; Hampstead, MD) was released in December 2013.

Charles Marsh is the Oscar Stauffer Professor at the William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of Kansas. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Kansas and has been a faculty member there since 1989. He teaches courses in public relations, communication ethics, and theories of strategic communication. Before joining the faculty at KU, Marsh was senior editor of corporate publications for the J.C. Penney Company and editor of American Way, the inflight magazine of American Airlines. His research focuses on applications of rhetoric and philosophy to modern disciplines of persuasive communication such as public relations, advertising, and marketing. He is author of Classical Rhetoric and Modern Public Relations and Public Relations, Cooperation, and Justice. With David Guth and Bonnie Poovey Short, he is coauthor of Strategic Writing: Multimedia Writing for Public Relations, Advertising, and More. His research has been published in several academic journals, including Public Relations Review, Journal of Public Relations Research, and Public Relations Inquiry. Marsh has served as a communications consultant for Ralston Purina, the USA Film Festival, the United States Information Agency, the American Management Association, JCPenney, and other organizations. At the University of Kansas, he is winner of the HOPE Award and the Kemper Award for teaching excellence.

About the Author

Kathleen M. Galvin (Ph.D. Northwestern University) is a professor in the Department of Communication Studies at Northwestern University. Her research interests focus on the social construction of families, particularly the discourse-dependent nature of families formed outside of full biological and traditional legal ties. She is the author of “Diversity’s Impact on Defining the Family: Discourse Dependence and Identity” in The Family Communication Sourcebook as well as related pieces on adoption, particularly transracial and/or transnational adoption, and family decision making in high stakes health situations involving minor children. She is the senior author of “Whose Future Is It? Ethical Family Decision Making about Daughters’ Treatment in the Oncofertility Context” as well as a co-author “Learning about Cancer and Fertility: A Guide for Parents of Young Children.” In addition, she served as the senior author of Family Communication: Cohesion and Change, throughout its earlier eight editions and the editor of Making Connections: Readings in Relational Communication, now in its 5th edition.

She is a researcher and teacher whose areas of expertise are healthcare communication and family communication about health. Dr. Bylund is the author of 59 peer-reviewed publications and 16 edited book chapters. Dr. Bylund received her PhD in Communication Studies from Northwestern University in 2001. Dr. Bylund was most recently Director of the Communication Skills Training and Research Laboratory at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and Associate Research Professor at Weill Cornell Medical College. Dr. Bylund’s teaching and research focuses on developing, implementing, and assessing interventions to improve patient and clinician communication. In addition, she has researched and published on family communication about genetics and family communication and storytelling.

Dawn O. Braithwaite, PhD, is a Willa Cather Professor and Chair of the Communication Studies Department at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She studies how people in personal and family relationships interact and negotiate family change and challenges. Her current work is centered in understudied families, communication rituals, and relational dialectics in the context of stepfamilies and voluntary kin. Dr. Braithwaite is the author of 95 articles in journals scholarly books, and co-author or editor of five scholarly books: Family Communication: Cohesion and Change (9th edition), Engaging Theories in Interpersonal Communication Engaging Theories in Family Communication, Casing Interpersonal Communication: Case Studies in Personal and Social Relationships and Handbook of Communication and People with Disabilities.

Buyer beware!

The code included did not work for my daughter's college course. We called Pearson and talked to 'Diane.' We were told that codes from Amazon would not work because Amazon was not authorized to sell them. What? I was not happy with Pearson, then even more unhappy when I had to pay $48 to Pearson to get a working code.

FYI: Two other codes that we purchased, one from Amazon and one from Neebo.com worked fine. I asked to talk to a supervisor and was none were available, that I could leave my name, and someone would get back to me next week. Again: What??? My daughter needs this for her class? Well, you will need to buy one then. Wait, I did... This went on for awhile until it was just too much to take. I do not deal with incompetence well.

Master of the Soap Box

Shortly after reading this book, I was able to stand on a street corner and address a multitude of people as they passed by me. I was able to lecture for hours on the coming of the apocalypse. I knew I was able to clearly get through to people as some actually glanced at me on their way by. It could have been my tinfoil hat or the socks I have not washed since July, but I would like to attribute it to this wonderful work of literature that helped me master public speaking.

Disappointing

I'd considered buying this book from Amazon, and decided to first examine a copy at the Boston Public Library. I was unimpressed. The tone seems aimed at middle-school students, and the text is littered with patronizing "Dick & Jane" anecdotes. A quick glance through the table of contents suggests that Grice and Skinner address nearly every conceivable aspect of public speaking -- but a closer examination reveals a complete lack of depth. It seems as if they simply brainstormed ways to add pages without actually investigating their subject.

The most derelict example I found was the second chapter, devoted entirely to a discussion of ethics. This chapter includes a section on plagiarism, where Grice and Skinner define plagiarism and warn students that getting caught may result in failing a class or being expelled from school -- hardly the sort of information you'd expect from a college-level textbook. Meanwhile, Grice and Skinner lazily sidestep the most challenging issue -- the employment of speechwriters -- by confining its mention to a brief, rhetorical question among the chapter-end exercises. In other words: "Here's a complex issue. We've exhausted our space with rudimentary ones, but we encourage you to do some real work on your own!"

There are some informative, useful books on public speaking. Richard Dowis and James Humes have each written excellent books on crafting and delivering a speech. Virgil Anderson and Ann Utterback have written valuable books on training your voice, and Livingston Taylor and Keith Johnstone have written classics on stage performance. My suggestion is to skip this book. I was thoroughly disappointed with its lack of ambition, and I'd hate to be stuck with a professor who found it respectable.

The book is very informative. It has cheatsheets printed on the back cover. There is also information to help you with your first speech because the author realized that speeches would be prepared before the student could finish reading the book.

About the Author

Dr. Nevid is also author of the book, Choices: Sex in the Age of STDs and the introductory psychology text, Psychology: Concepts and Applications, as well as several other college texts in the fields of psychology and health that he coauthored with Spencer A. Rathus. Dr. Nevid has also been involved in conducting a program of pedagogical research focusing on helping students become more effective learners.

Spencer A. Rathus received his PhD from the University at Albany. He is on the faculty at The College of New Jersey. His areas of interest include psychological assessment, cognitive behavior therapy, and deviant behavior. He is the originator of the Rathus Assertiveness Schedule, which has become a Citation Classic. He has authored several books, including Psychology: Concepts and Connections, Essentials of Psychology, Childhood and Adolescence: Voyages in Development, PSYCH, HDEV, and CDEV. He co-authored Making the Most of College with Lois Fichner-Rathus; AIDS: What Every Student Needs To Know with Susan Boughn; Behavior Therapy, Psychology and the Challenges of Life, Your Health, and Health in the New Millennium with Jeffrey S. Nevid; and Human Sexuality in a World of Diversity with Jeffrey S. Nevid and Lois Fichner-Rathus. His professional activities include service on the American Psychological Association Task Force on Diversity Issues at the Precollege and Undergraduate Levels of Education in Psychology, and on the Advisory Panel, American Psychological Association, Board of Educational Affairs (BEA) Task Force on Undergraduate Psychology Major Competencies.

Beverly A. Greene is Professor of Psychology at St. John's University and is a Fellow of seven divisions of the American Psychological Association, as well as a Fellow of the American Orthopsychiatric Association and the Academy of Clinical Psychology. She holds a Diplomate in Clinical Psychology and serves on the editorial boards of numerous scholarly journals. She received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Adelphi University and worked in public mental health for over a decade. She was founding co-editor of the APA Society for the Study of Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Issues series, Psychological Perspectives on Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Issues. She is also coauthor of the recent book, What Therapists Don’t Talk About And Why: Understanding Taboos that Hurt Ourselves and Our Clients, and has more than 80 professional publications that are the subject of nine national awards. Dr. Greene was recipient of the APA 2003 Committee On Women In Psychology Distinguished Leadership Award, 1996 Outstanding Achievement Award from the APA Committee on Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Concerns, the 2004 Distinguished Career Contributions to Ethnic Minority Research Award from the APA Society for the Study of Ethnic Minority Issues, the 2000 Heritage Award from the APA Society for the Psychology of Women, the 2004 Award for Distinguished Senior Career Contributions to Ethnic Minority Research (APA Division 45), and the 2005 Stanley Sue Award for Distinguished Professional Contributions to Diversity in Clinical Psychology (APA Division 12). Her co-edited book, Psychotherapy with African American Women: Innovations in Psychodynamic Perspectives and Practice, was also honored with the Association for Women in Psychology’s 2001 Distinguished Publication Award. In 2006 she was the recipient of the Janet Helms Award for Scholarship and Mentoring from the Teacher's College, Columbia University Cross Cultural Roundtable, and of the 2006 Florence Halpern Award for Distinguished Professional Contributions to Clinical Psychology (Div. 12 APA). She is an elected representative to the APA Council and member at large of the Women's and Public Interest Caucuses of the Council.

About the Author

Dr. Linda Dorsten is Professor of Sociology at SUNY-Fredonia. She has served as research consultant to six state and community agencies across several states, and as an evaluator for “Steps to a Healthier U.S.,” a 5-year initiative funded by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Dr. Dorsten has published articles in Demography, Population Research and Policy Review, Sociology of Education, Research in Sociology of Education and Socialization, and Sociological Focus. She also has written two textbooks on research methods, including Research Methods and Society, 1/e (with L. Hotchkiss; Prentice-Hall 2005).

Lawrence Hotchkiss is retired from the University of Delaware where he spent 20 years doing statistical consulting. He is author or coauthor of numerous journal articles, past president of the Delaware Chapter of the American Statistical Association and current Treasurer of same.
