Good and Interesting Text

I usually have a hard time following secondary history sources, however reading this condensed reader is extremely easy to follow. The information isn't overwhelming and gives you the important details of what happened. One gripe I may have is that it doesn't go too in depth about the grisly details, such as the subjugation the Natives went through by the Spaniard, however it does iterate that it happened. The lectures at my college, along with primary sources, help fill in the rest of the details, so I can easily oversee the skimming over of details. Each section is followed by concise summaries to help define the main points, also it gives timelines which is also helpful! Overall it's an interesting read and I found it excitingly helpful that it was available as an e-book. I forgot to order this book before my classes began and needed it starting the first day so I got immediate delivery to my Kindle! Truly convenient!

About the Author

Jeffrey Jensen Arnett is a Research Professor in the Department of Psychology at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts. He received his Ph.D. in developmental psychology in 1986 from the University of Virginia, and did 3 years of postdoctoral work at the University of Chicago. From 1992—1998 he was Associate Professor in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies at the University of Missouri where he taught a 300-student life-span development course every semester. From 1998—2005 he was a Visiting Associate Professor in the Department of Human Development at the University of Maryland. In the fall of 2005 he was a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark.

    His primary scholarly interest for the past 10 years has been in emerging adulthood. He coined the term, and has conducted research on emerging adults concerning a wide variety of topics, involving several different ethnic groups in American society. He is the editor of the Journal of Adolescent Research, and is on the Editorial Board of four other journals. He has published many theoretical and research papers on emerging adulthood in peer-reviewed journals, as well as the books Adolescence and Emerging Adulthood: A Cultural Approach (2013, 5th edition, Pearson), and Emerging Adulthood: The Winding Road from the Late Teens Through the Twenties (2004, Oxford University Press).

Ashley E. Maynard is Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychology at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, where she has been on the faculty since 2001.  She received her Ph.D. in Psychology in 1999 from the University of California, Los Angeles and did two years of postdoctoral study in Anthropology and Cultural Psychology in the Department of Neuropsychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences at UCLA.

    Her primary research interest since 1995 has been the impacts of cultural change at the macro-level, such as economic and sociodemographic shifts, on socialization and cognition in childhood.  She also studies the development of teaching in childhood and sibling interactions.  She works with her students in Mexico, Costa Rica, Switzerland, and Hawaii.  She has won national awards for her research, including the James McKeen Cattell Award from the New York Academy of Sciences and the APA Division 7 (Developmental Psychology) Dissertation Award.  She has published many articles on culture and human development in peer-reviewed journals, and an edited book Learning in Cultural Context: Family, Peers, and School (2005, Springer).

About the Author
Joseph A. DeVito received his BA from Hunter College in 1960, his MA from Temple University in 1962 and his PhD from the University of Illinois in 1964.  After receiving his PhD, he taught at Hunter College-in-the-Bronx (later Lehman College).  He has taught a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate courses, though he has concentrated on the undergraduate level and mainly on the introductory courses. He has served on the editorial boards of Quarterly Journal of Speech, Communication Monographs, Communication Education, Communication Quarterly, Journal of Communication, and Etc: A Review of General Semantics.

Not my first choice for a basic book

Very politically correct, and thus helpful if you plan on speaking to a cross-cultural audience. I had it for an introductory public-speaking college course (undergrad), and found it too heavy on PC and not heavy enough on basic public-speaking skills, an overall frustrating experience.

I ordered this book because it was required for my speech class. It did have a lot of common sense information that most people would already know but the book was very helpful, informative and interesting. Even if the book is not a requirement, I would recommend to anyone seeking a higher level of knowledge in speaking.

Excellent book, but may not be necessary.

I literally used only 2 pages from this book and made an A in my speech class. I honestly don't know if I should consider that a good thing because the book was expensive for being 1s and 0s on my PC. Unless your instructor is going to be quizzing/making exams from the book I suggest you save your money and simply get the 2 pages that illustrate the outline. If you have a speech instructor/professor/teacher earning their pay this book is pointless. Two Stars for the 2 pages. I am by no means belittling the author or his effort, the book has a lot of excellent information for future public speakers but if speech as a class is nothing more than something to mark off on your degree/graduation plan then just find the speech outline.

About the Author

John Moritsugu received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York. He is Professor of Psychology at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington. A co-editor of the text Preventive Psychology, he has also been on the editorial boards of the American Journal of Community Psychology, the Journal of Community Psychology, and Cultural Diversity and Ethnic Minority Psychology. He is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association in Divisions 1 (General Psychology), 27 (Society for Community Research and Action) and 45 (Society for the Psychological Study of Ethnic Minority Issues).

Frank Y. Wong, Ph.D. is a social psychologist in the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Health Education at Rollins School of Public Health, Emory University . His expertise is in community-based research on HIV-related risk behaviors and alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs (ATOD) use/abuse among racial/ethnic and under-served populations. Dr. Wong currently has multiple NIH-funded R01 grants supporting his research programs. His NIH-funded research focuses on social epidemiology as well as prevention of ATOD and HIV targeting migrant and/or non-indigenous populations and sexual minorities and the effects of migration on ATOD use/ abuse and HIV-related knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors in the U.S. and China. He also has conducted and published research in South Africa.

Karen Duffy holds a Ph.D. in psychology from Michigan State University. She is a Distinguished Service Professor — Emerita from State University of New York at Geneseo. Dr. Duffy taught community psychology for many years as well as social psychology and psychology of personality. She instituted and directed the service learning program at her college. She won two Fulbright Fellowships to St. Petersburg State University in Russia where she taught both community psychology and community mediation. She still teaches in Russia and continues her award-winning community service projects in the United States, Russia, and other countries, most recently Mongolia.
