About the Author
Brenda DuBois, MSW,LCSW, Ph.D. is Professor of Social Work at St. Ambrose University, Davenport, Iowa. She has been a graduate and undergraduate social work educator in Iowa for thirty-three years. Professor DuBois received her masters degree in social work in 1977 at the University of Iowa and a doctorate in educational administration from Illinois State University in 2002. She has extensive social work practice and consultation experience in public welfare, community planning, organizational development, and program evaluation. Dr. DuBois serves as a member on a number of community agency initiatives, ethics committees, and as a board member to agencies in the Quad Cities. She has published several articles on ethics and empowerment and has co-authored two social work texts on empowerment in social work: Social Work: An Empowering Profession with Karla Miley and Generalist Social Work Practice: An Empowering Approach with Karla Miley and Michael O’Melia.

Karla Miley, MSW,LSW is Professor Emerita, Black Hawk College, Moline, Illinois. She has been a graduate and undergraduate social work educator in Illinois and Iowa for thirty years. Professor Miley received her masters degree in social work in 1966 at the University of Chicago, School of Social Service Administration. She has extensive social work practice and consultation experience in school social work, health care, child welfare, and aging services. About the Author

Spencer A. Rathus received his PhD from the University at Albany. He is on the faculty at The College of New Jersey. His areas of interest include psychological assessment, cognitive behavior therapy, and deviant behavior. He is the originator of the Rathus Assertiveness Schedule, which has become a Citation Classic. He has authored several books, including Psychology: concepts and Connections; PSYCH, HDEV, CDEV, Essentials of Psychology, and Childhood and Adolescence: Voyages in Development. He co-authored Making the Most of College with Lois Fichner-Rathus; AIDS: What Every Student Needs To Know with Susan Boughn; and Behavior Therapy, Psychology and the Challenges of Life, Your Health and Health in the New Millennium with Jeffrey S. Nevid. His professional activities include service on the American Psychological Association Task Force on Diversity Issues at the Precollege and Undergraduate Levels of Education in Psychology, and on the Advisory Panel, American Psychological Association, Board of Educational Affairs (BEA) Task Force on Undergraduate Psychology Major Competencies.

Jeffrey S. Nevid is Professor of Psychology at St. John's University in New York, where he directs the Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology, teaches at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and supervises doctoral students in clinical practicum work. He received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University at Albany and was a staff psychologist at Samaritan Hospital in Troy, New York. He later completed a National Institute of Mental Health Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Mental Health Evaluation Research at Northwestern University. He holds a Diplomate in Clinical Psychology from the American Board of Professional Psychology, is a Fellow of the Academy of Clinical Psychology, and has served on the editorial boards of several journals and as Associate Editor of the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology. His publications have appeared his in such journals as Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, Health Psychology, Journal of Occupational Medicine, Behavior Therapy, American Journal of Community Psychology, Professional Psychology: Research and Practice, Journal of Clinical Psychology, Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease, Teaching of Psychology, American Journal of Health Promotion , and Psychology and Psychotherapy.

Dr. Nevid is also author of the book, Choices: Sex in the Age of STDs and the introductory psychology text, Psychology: Concepts and Applications, as well as several other college texts in the fields of psychology and health that he coauthored with Spencer A. Rathus. Dr. Nevid has also been involved in conducting a program of pedagogical research focusing on helping students become more effective learners.

Lois Fichner-Rathus is Professor of Art in the Art Department of The College of New Jersey, where she has also chaired the Program in Gender Studies. She holds a combined undergraduate degree in fine arts and art history, an M.A. from the Williams College Graduate Program in the History of Art, and a Ph.D. in the History, Theory, and Criticism of Art from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Her areas of specialization include feminist art history and criticism, contemporary art, and modern art and architecture. She has authored several textbooks, including Understanding Art and Foundations of Art and Design. She has also published articles in professional journals and exhibited her large-format photographic prints.

About the Author

Richard Robbins received his Ph.D. in anthropology from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and has spent his entire teaching career at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh.  Some of his most formative academic experiences include field research among Cree, Inuit and Naskapi First Nations peoples of Canada, Acadian farmers and fisherfolk in New Brunswick, Canada, and among religious communal societies in the United States.  A research semester at the Science Studies Unit at the University of Edinburgh would count as one of his most stimulating intellectual experiences. 

 

He has received the State University of New York’s Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and the American Anthropological Association/McGraw-Hill Teacher of the Year Award.  He appeared also in the hit anti-globalization documentary, The Yes Men.  He is currently SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor at Plattsburgh, and maintains a global problems website at www.plattsburgh.edu/legacy and a general website at faculty.plattsburgh.edu/richard.robbins.  He can be contacted by email at richard.robbins@plattsburgh.edu.

About the Author

Michael Chazan is an Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology and the Director of the Archaeology Centre at the University of Toronto. He earned his Ph.D. in anthropology at Yale University. Before coming to Toronto, Dr. Chazan was a postdoctoral fellow with the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique in Paris and at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Among his field experience are excavations in New Jersey, France, Israel, Jordan, Egypt, and South Africa. Dr. Chazan’s publications include a monograph on the Lower Paleolithic site of Holon, Israel, coauthored with Liora Kolska-Horwitz. Dr. Chazan is currently engaged in a project on the Earlier Stone Age of South Africa. The project pulls together an international team of researchers to study a series of spectacular sites located in the Northern Cape Province.

About the Author

Alan R. Kemp is Professor and Chair of the sociology department at Pierce College, Ft. Steilacoom, Washington, where he teaches a course on death, dying, and bereavement. He holds master’s degrees in social work and divinity. He earned his doctorate at the then amalgamated colleges of St. Stephen’s and St. Andrew’s in Edmonton, Alberta and Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. He has many years experience in teaching, ministry, and professional counseling. He is a licensed

mental health professional. He was among the last American advisors serving on “Swift Boats” (PCFs) in Vietnam. He lives with his wife, Claudia, and a menagerie of “critters” at their cabin on property in rural western Washington state.

About the Author

Nijole V. Benokraitis, professor emerita of sociology at the University of Baltimore, taught the marriage and family course for almost 25 years. It was her favorite class but her courses in racial and ethnic relations and gender roles ran a close second. Professor Benokraitis received a B.A. in sociology and English from Emmanuel College in Boston, an M.A. in sociology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Texas at Austin.

 

She was a strong proponent of applied sociology and required her students to enhance their knowledge through interviews, direct observation, and other hands-on learning methods. She also enlisted her students in community service activities such as tutoring and mentoring inner-city high school students, writing to government officials and other decision makers about specific social problems, and volunteering research services to nonprofit organizations.

 

Professor Benokraitis immigrated to the United States from Lithuania with her family after World War II as a political refugee when she was five years old. She is bilingual and bicultural and is very empathetic of students who must balance the demands of several cultural worlds.

She has authored, co-authored, edited, or co-edited ten books, including Seeing Ourselves: Classic, Contemporary, and Cross-Cultural Readings in Sociology, Contemporary Ethnic Families in the United States: Characteristics, Variations, and Dynamics; Feuds about Families: Conservative, Centrist, Liberal, and Feminist Perspectives; and Modern Sexism: and Blatant, Subtle, and Covert Discrimination. Dr. Benokraitis has published numerous articles and book chapters on topics such as institutional racism, discrimination against women in government and higher education, fathers in two-earner families, displaced homemakers, and family policy.

 

She has received grants and fellowships from many institutions, including the National Institute of Mental Health, the Ford Foundation, the American Educational Research Association, the Administration on Aging, and the National Endowment for the Humanities. She has also served as a consultant in the areas of sex and race discrimination to women’s commissions, business groups, colleges and universities, federal government programs, and the American Association of University Women’s International Fellowships Program.

 

Dr. Benokraitis has made several appearances on radio and television shows on gender communication differences and single-sex educational institutions. She currently serves on the editorial board of Women & Criminal Justice and reviews manuscripts for several academic journals.

Professor Benokraitis lives in Maryland with her husband, Dr. Vitalius Benokraitis, a vice president at a technology assessment company. They have two adult children, Gema and Andrius.
