About the Author
Dr. Debra J. Mashek is a member of the research faculty at George Mason University. She received her Ph.D. in Social and Health Psychology from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Her research examines the influence of interpersonal closeness (including community connectednes) on cognitive self-processing, relationship satisfaction, and psychological adjustment.
Dr. Arthur Aron is Professor of Psychology at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He has published widely on relationships, has been awarded major grants for the study of relationships, and is best known for his work on the cognitive structure of closeness. He recently completed a six-year term as Associate Editor of the "Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.

Elaine N. Aron, Ph.D., earned her doctorate from Pacifica Graduate Institute and trained at the Jung Institute in San Francisco. The author of The Highly Sensitive Person, she is widely published in academic journals and conducts workshops for HSPs around the country. She divides her time between San Francisco and New York.

Worth It

I was nervous about getting it "Loose Leaf" but I'm glad that I did because it makes it easier to just take the chapters I need to read at work or anywhere else. I love that it comes with the MyStatLab access code since I noticed other sellers sold it separately. I recommend a 1.5 inch binder or bigger since my 1 inch binder was a tight fit for turning the pages. javascript:void(0)

Mathematically Challenged and Loved this Text

I hate statistics, but this book made it impossibly easy to understand. I actually got an A in the class and I took college Algebra and barely passed with a C. Really recommend the use of this text for those of us that are a little more mathematically challenged.

About the Author
Maxine Baca Zinn is professor emerita in the Department of Sociology at Michigan State University. She received her Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Oregon. Her books include: Women of Color in U.S. Society (with Bonnie Thornton Dill) and Gender Through the Prism of Difference (with Pierrette Hondagneu-Sotelo and Michael Messner). She is the coauthor (with D. Stanley Eitzen) of Social Problems and Diversity in Families–both of which won McGuffey Awards for excellence over multiple editions from the Text and Academic Authors Association–and Globalization: The Transformation of Social Worlds. She has served as president of the Western Social Science Association. In 2000, she received the American Sociological Association's Jessie Bernard Award for expanding the horizons of sociology to include the study of women.

D. Stanley Eitzen is professor emeritus in sociology from Colorado State University, where previously he was the John N. Stern Distinguished Professor. He recieved his Ph.D. from the University of Kansas. Among his books are Social Problems, which was awarded the McGuffey Longevity Award for excellence over multiple editions in 2000 by the Text and Academic Authors Association, and Diversity in Families (both co-authored with Maxine Baca Zinn); Solutions to Social Problems: Lessons from Other Societies (with Graig S. Leeham); Paths to Homelessness: Extreme Poverty and the Urban Housing Crisis (with Doug A. Timmer and Kathryn Talley); Sociology of North American Sport (with George H. Sage); and Fair and Foul: Rethinking the Myths and Paradoxes of Sport. He has served as the president of the North American Society for the Sociology of Sport and as editor of The Social Science Journal.

Barbara Wells is associate professor of sociology at Maryville College, where she is also chair of the Division of Social Sciences. She received her Ph.D. from Michigan State University. She is co-author of Diversity in Families (with Maxine Baca Zinn and D. Stanley Eitzen). Her research and publishing has centered on marriage, rural families, structural transformation and family life, and Latino families. She is presently working on a book manuscript on the work and family lives of Mexican American women who are daughters and granddaughters of immigrant farm workers.

About the Author
Kelly Shea Welch teaches in the School of Family Studies and Human Services at Kansas State University. A native of Kansas, she received her Ph.D. in Family Studies at Kansas State University after working for many years as a doula, a professional birth attendant who provides emotional, physical, and informational support to the childbearing woman and her partner. Still today her research interests marry women’s health issues with family studies. Over the past 10 years, she has taught the large, introductory human growth and development course which enrolls a little more than 1,000 students per semester. The author of the interactive learning CD Roms, Development: Journey of a Lifetime, and Development: Journey through Childhood and Adolescence, she recognizes and emphasizes the value of active and learner-centered pedagogy that allows students to organize, integrate, and generate knowledge. In addition to teaching the human growth and development course, she also teaches the Family Relationships class that enrolls approximately 300 students each semester. She is a recipient of numerous teaching awards, including the Presidential Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching, and nominations for the United States Professor of the Year and the United States Distance Educator of the Year. These teaching awards and nominations recognize her distinct, innovative, and energetic teaching style—students consistently indicate that this unique teaching style puts them “on the edge” of their seats and holds their attention.

About the Author

Dave Szatmary worked in the music industry and taught the history of rock and roll at several universities after earning his Ph.D. in American History at Rutgers University. He currently serves as the Vice Provost of Educational Outreach at the University of Washington, one of the premier professional and continuing education programs in the country that serves 50,000 students annually. Robert A. Divine Robert A. Divine, George W. Littlefield Professor Emeritus in American History at the University of Texas at Austin, received his Ph.D. from Yale University in 1954. A specialist in American diplomatic history, he taught from 1954 to 1996 at the University of Texas, where he was honored by both the student association and the graduate school for teaching excellence. His extensive published work includes The Illusion of Neutrality (1962); Second Chance: The Triumph of Internationalism in America During World War II (1967); and Blowing on the Wind (1978). His most recent work is Perpetual War for Perpetual Peace (2000), a comparative analysis of twentieth-century American wars. He is also the author of Eisenhower and the Cold War (1981) and editor of three volumes of essays on the presidency of Lyndon Johnson. His book, The Sputnik Challenge (1993), won the Eugene E. Emme Astronautical Literature Award for 1993. He has been a fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences and has given the Albert Shaw Lectures in Diplomatic History at Johns Hopkins University. T. H. Breen T. H. Breen, William Smith Mason Professor of American History at North western Uni versity, received his Ph.D. from Yale University in 1968. He has taught at Northwestern since 1970. Breen’s major books include The Character of the Good Ruler: A Study of Puritan Political Ideas in New England (1974); Puritans and Adventurers: Change and Persistence in Early America (1980); Tobacco Culture: The Mentality of the Great Tidewater Planters on the Eve of Revolution (1985); and, with Stephen Innes of the University of Virginia, “Myne Owne Ground”: Race and Freedom on Virginia’s Eastern Shore (1980). His Imagining the Past (1989) won the 1990 Historic Preservation Book Award. His most recent book is Marketplace of Revolution: How Consumer Politics Shaped American Independence (2004). Hal Williams is professor of history at Southern Methodist University. He received his A.B. from Prince ton Uni versity in 1963 and his Ph.D. from Yale Uni versity in 1968. His books include The Democratic Party and California Politics, 1880–1896 (1973); Years of Decision: American Politics in the 1890s (1978); and The Manhattan Project: A Documentary Introduction to the Atomic Age (1990). A specialist in American political history, he taught at Yale University from 1968 to 1975 and came to SMU in 1975 as chair of the Department of History. From 1980 to 1988, he served as dean of Dedman College, the school of humanities and sciences, at SMU, where he is currently dean of Research and Graduate Studies. In 1980, he was a visiting professor at University College, Oxford University. Williams has received grants from the American Philosophical Society and the National Endowment for the Humanities, and he has served on the Texas Committee for the Humanities. He is currently working on a study of the presidential election of 1896 and a biography of James G. Blaine, the late-nineteenth-century speaker of the House, secretary of state, and Republican presidential candidate. Ariela J. Gross Ariela J. Gross is Professor of Law and History at the University of Southern Cali fornia. She received her B.A. from Harvard University, her J.D. from Stanford Law School, and her Ph.D. from Stanford University. She is the author of Double Character: Slavery and Mastery in the Antebellum Southern Courtroom (2000) and numerous law review articles and book chapters, including “‘Caucasian Cloak’: Mexican Americans and the Politics of Whiteness in the Twentieth-Century Southwest” in the Georgetown Law Journal (2006). Her current work in progress, What Blood Won’t Tell: Racial Identity on Trial in America, to be published by Farrar, Straus & Giroux, is supported by fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the American Council for Learned Societies. H.W. Brands Henry William Brands was born in Oregon, went to college in California, sold cutlery across the American West, and earned graduate degrees in mathematics and history in Oregon and Texas. Rethink your choices.

I didn't purchase this book from Amazon, but rather through my college bookstore. I am the sort to enjoy history. I like reading about it, watching documentaries, and I regularly listen to history podcasts.

This book is terrible. I do not exaggerate when I say this is the worst history book I've ever read. The writing is disjointed, with jarring interruptions were it is noticeable when they switched authors. The flow of the text makes it frustrating to read, even if you are trying to be interested in the subject matter. But even the subject matter seems to be glossed over in favor of small editorializations. Critically important figures are glossed over with a sentence or two, while dates and locations are barraged at you, often without even the real significance.

It is so terrible that I have come here to warn you, a prospective student for a class which uses this book, to change classes to one that does not use it. If I can save just one soul from having to go through the torment that is reading this book, writing this review was worth it. Do it for yourself, do it for the love of history, do it for the love of loving history, but avoid this book.

I bought this e-textbook for a History course at the community college. Unlike other texts I have read lately, this one kept my interest. It tells history from more than one peoples perspective and cites specific stories to illustrate them.

About the Author
Pamela Grundy is an independent historian who lives in Charlotte, North Carolina, where she pursues a variety of writing, teaching and museum projects. Her sports-related publications include Learning to Win: Sports, Education and Social Change in Twentieth-Century North Carolina, and Shattering the Glass: The Remarkable History of Women's Basketball (co-written with Susan Shackelford). Her work on sports has been published in the Journal of American History, the International Journal of the History of Sport and Southern Cultures, and has received awards from the American Historical Association, the North American Society for Sport History the History of Education Society and the Oral History Association.
Benjamin G. Rader is James L. Sellers Professor of History, Emeritus, University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He has authored eight books, including Baseball: A History of American Game, 3rd. ed. (2008) and has had articles appear in the Journal of American History, American Quarterly, the Journal of Sport History, and the Journal of Popular Culture. Presently, he is completing a book tentatively entitled Down in the Hollows: A Tale of Neighborhood and Family in the Missouri Ozarks. Married with one adult child and three grandchildren, he continues to be an avid tennis player.
