My passion is teaching writing and helping people understand its importance in our society today."" " "I earned my B.A. in English at Washington University in my hometown and then started teaching at Morton College in Chicago, where I began a Developmental Writing program in 1969. Three years later, I came to California State University, Bakersfield, where I currently direct the Writing Program. I enjoy teaching writing through my books and my classes."" " "I can't imagine any mission more important to the success of a society than literacy. Teaching people who to understand words they encounter and how to express their most cherished ideas can relieve their personal frustration, rejuvenate their self-esteem, provide them with skills they need to succeed, and ultimately raise the quality of all our lives. I feel truly privileged to be involved in such a life-changing passion.""

School Affiliations: The author is a Professor of English at California State University, Bakersfield, where he is also Director of University Honors Programs, Head Judo and Self-Defense Instructor, and Assistant Coach of the Women's Tennis Team. For the past twenty summers, he's also been Company Dramaturg for the Tony-Award-winning Utah Shakespearean Festival in Cedar City, Utah, where he's been on the design teams for over ninety professional productions of Shakespeare's plays. Since he has a doctorate in English literature from the University of Chicago, over thirty years' experience teaching the plays in the college classroom, many publications to his credit, and twenty years' service as a dramaturg in professional theatre, he has the expertise necessary to bring these plays to life for today's generation of students.

Honors and Awards: He's won a number of teaching awards, the most prestigious of which have been Carnegie Foundation United States Professor of the Year (1995), Outstanding Professor for the twenty-campus California State University System (1993), a $20,000 CSU Wang Family Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching (1999), and a recent California Senate Resolution honoring him for "twenty-two years of excellence in teaching" (2004).

Do not purchase from them

I was supposed to purchase this as a book itself, instead of an eText. I didn't realize the word "eText" when I purchased it (careless, I know). Anyways, I have not opened the etext package yet to make sure that I can ship back the item and get a full refund. I messaged them short after I received my item to set up a refund, but I never received a reply. Now I have to sell this item back for a cheaper price because I cannot receive my full refund.

You guys suck.

About the Author

Laura E. Berk is a distinguished professor of psychology at Illinois State University, where she has taught human development to both undergraduate and graduate students for more than three decades. She received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of California, Berkeley, and her master’s and doctoral degrees in child development and educational psychology from the University of Chicago. She has been a visiting scholar at Cornell University, UCLA, Stanford University, and the University of South Australia.

Berk has published widely on the effects of school environments on children’s development, the development of private speech, and the role of make-believe play in development. Her research has been funded by the U.S. Office of Education and the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. It has appeared in many prominent journals, including Child Development, Developmental Psychology, Merrill-Palmer Quarterly, Journal of Abnormal Child Psychology, Development and Psychopathology, and Early Childhood Research Quarterly. Her empirical studies have attracted the attention of the general public, leading to contributions to Psychology Today and Scientific American. She has also been featured on National Public Radio’s Morning Edition and in Parents Magazine, Wondertime, and Reader’s Digest.

Berk has served as a research editor for Young Children and a consulting editor for Early Childhood Research Quarterly. Currently, she is an associate editor for the Journal of Cognitive Education and Psychology. She is a frequent contributor to edited volumes on early childhood development, having recently authored chapters on the importance of parenting, on make-believe play and self-regulation, and on the kindergarten child. She has also written the article on social development for The Child: An Encyclopedic Companion; the article on Vygotsky for the Encyclopedia of Cognitive Science; and the chapter on storytelling as a teaching strategy for Voices of Experience: Memorable Talks from the National Institute on the Teaching of Psychology (Association for Psychological Science). She is the coauthor of the forthcoming chapter on make-believe play and self-regulation in the Sage Handbook of Play in Early Childhood.

Berk’s books include Private Speech: From Social Interaction to Self-Regulation; Scaffolding Children’s Learning: Vygotsky and Early Childhood Education; Landscapes of Development: An Anthology of Readings; and A Mandate for Playful Learning in Preschool: Presenting the Evidence. In addition to Exploring Lifespan Development, she is author of the best-selling texts Child Development and Infants, Children, and Adolescents, and Development Through the Lifespan published by Pearson. Her book for parents and teachers is Awakening Children’s Minds: How Parents and Teachers Can Make a Difference.

Berk is active in work for children’s causes. In addition to service in her home community, she is a member of the national board of directors and chair of the Chicago advisory board of Jumpstart, a nonprofit organization that provides intensive literacy intervention to thousands of low-income preschoolers across the United States, using college and university students as interveners. Berk is a fellow of the American Psychological Association, Division 7: Developmental Psychology.

Same book as the 1st edition

I read a review that said this 2nd edition is the same as the cheap 1st edition only pictures were changed but it was just one person review and I didn't want to risk it. I always try to buy a book online ahead of time, so I don't have to pay 4 times more at the university book store.
I went ahead and purchased the 2nd edition. Then I downloaded the 1st edition for free. I opened the 2nd edition book and the 1st edition downloaded book, went chapter by chapter - THEY ARE IDENTICAL. Word-to-word! All the titles of the chapters - it's all the same. Yes, the pictures/photographs may vary but all the charts and the text did not change. So, save yourself money. You can buy the 1st edition for about ten bucks or download it for free.

Decent text

This is a fairly decent text for human development. Each age group explores physical, emotional and mental development using some widely acknowledged theories such as Vygotsky and Piaget. Each is broken down to a level that is easily comprehensible even for someone who has not taken previous psychology courses. My main complaint is that the author also uses the book as her personal soapbox and expresses her personal views as fact. She seems to be pretty liberal in most things so if you're liberal you would probably have no issues with what she says. But, putting that aside, the book seems fairly decent for a beginning level college course.

Get the 1st Edition, virtually the same book!

This might be news to some folks, but this is really just a rehash of the 1st edition. The pictures are different, perhaps a bit more G-rated in comparison to the original. For example, Chapter 3 discusses effects of teratogens (mutating/ deforming substances)on a human fetus. The charts are the same, the discussion is the same, but the photos of the children born with these defects have been updated. The 2nd edition features a mother and daughter reading a book, the little girl has one finger. The 1st edition has a boy who is facing forward, has short limbs, missing one arm. So far, I can say edition 1 seems to be a bit more intense. Not for the faint of heart, there are some fairly sad pictures in there, yet ultimately it is the same book.

Overall, if you are taking a Human Development class online and need a Pearson access code, be careful! The item being sold here IS JUST THE TEXTBOOK! I had to return this textbook and Amazon promptly refunded me my $112.

The thing is, save yourself the hassle and buy the 1st edition for $10 from a used seller here, the online access code from the Pearson website is a whopping $77 (that's a chunk of change if you are a student!) but in the end you wind up saving about $25!

About the Author

SCOTT O. LILIENFELD received his B.A. in Psychology from Cornell University in 1982 and his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Minnesota in 1990. He completed his clinical internship at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, from 1986 to 1987. He was Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at SUNY Albany from 1990 to 1994 and now is Professor of Psychology at Emory University. He is a Fellow of the Association of Psychological Science and was the recipient of the 1998 David Shakow Award from Division 12 (Clinical Psychology) of the American Psychological Association for Early Career Contributions to Clinical Psychology. Dr. Lilienfeld is a past president of the Society for a Science of Clinical Psychology within Division 12. He is the founder and editor of the Scientific Review of Mental Health Practice, Associate Editor of Applied and Preventive Psychology, and a regular columnist for Scientific American Mind magazine. He has authored or coauthored seven books and over 200 journal articles and chapters. Dr. Lilienfeld has also been a participant in Emory University’s “Great Teachers” lecturer series, as well as the Distinguished Speaker for the Psi Chi Honor Society at the American Psychological Association and numerous other national conventions.

STEVEN JAY LYNN received his B.A. in Psychology from the University of Michigan and his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Indiana University. He completed an NIMH Postdoctoral Fellowship at Lafayette Clinic, Detroit, Michigan, in 1976 and is now Professor of Psychology at Binghamton University (SUNY), where he is the director of the Psychological Clinic. Dr. Lynn is a fellow of numerous professional organizations, including the American Psychological Association and the American Psychological Society, and he was the recipient of the Chancellor’s Award of the State University of New York for Scholarship and Creative Activities. Dr. Lynn has authored or edited 19 books and more than 260 other publications, and was recently named on a list of “Top Producers of Scholarly Publications in Clinical Psychology Ph.D. Programs” (2000-2004/Stewart, Wu, & Roberts, 2007, Journal of Clinical Psychology). Dr. Lynn has served as the editor of a book series for the American Psychological Association, and he has served on 11 editorial boards, including the Journal of Abnormal Psychology. Dr. Lynn’s research has been supported by the National Institute of Mental Health and the Ohio Department of Mental Health.

LAURA L. NAMY received her B.A. in Philosophy and Psychology from Indiana University in 1993 and her doctorate in Cognitive Psychology at Northwestern University in 1998. She is now Associate Professor of Psychology and Core Faculty in Linguistics at Emory University. Dr. Namy is the editor of the Journal of Cognition and Development. At Emory, she is Director of the Emory Child Study Center and Associate Director of the Center for Mind, Brain, and Culture. Her research focuses on the origins and development of verbal and nonverbal symbol use in young children, sound symbolism in natural language, and the role of comparison in conceptual development.

NANCY J. WOOLF received her B.S. in Psychobiology at UCLA in 1978 and her Ph.D. in Neuroscience at UCLA School of Medicine in 1983. She is Adjunct Professor in the Department of Psychology at UCLA. Her specialization is behavioral neuroscience, and her research spans the organization of acetylcholine systems, neural plasticity, memory, neural degeneration, Alzheimer’s disease, and consciousness. In 1990 she won the Colby Prize from the Sigma Kappa Foundation, awarded for her achievements in scientific research in Alzheimer disease. In 2002 she received the Academic Advancement Program Faculty Recognition Award. She also received a Distinguished Teaching Award from the Psychology Department at UCLA in 2008. Dr. Woolf is currently on the editorial boards of Science and Consciousness Review and Journal of Nanoneuroscience.

Not very happy

The access code was not in the package, so I wouldn't recommend purchasing this version. The book was in great condition, but I got this one because it specifically said that it contained the access code for mypsychlab.

Like other people have said, it is advertised as being an access card package. However, there is no access code attached. I recommend changing the title to textbook only, or something along those lines to prevent others from making the same mistake.
