About the Author
Robert A. Divine Robert A. Divine, George W. Littlefield Professor Emeritus in American History at the University of Texas at Austin, received his Ph.D. from Yale University in 1954. A specialist in American diplomatic history, he taught from 1954 to 1996 at the University of Texas, where he was honored by both the student association and the graduate school for teaching excellence. His extensive published work includes The Illusion of Neutrality (1962); Second Chance: The Triumph of Internationalism in America During World War II (1967); and Blowing on the Wind (1978). His most recent work is Perpetual War for Perpetual Peace (2000), a comparative analysis of twentieth-century American wars. He is also the author of Eisenhower and the Cold War (1981) and editor of three volumes of essays on the presidency of Lyndon Johnson. His book, The Sputnik Challenge (1993), won the Eugene E. Emme Astronautical Literature Award for 1993. He has been a fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences and has given the Albert Shaw Lectures in Diplomatic History at Johns Hopkins University.   T. H. Breen T. H. Breen, William Smith Mason Professor of American History at North­ western Uni­ versity, received his Ph.D. from Yale University in 1968. He has taught at Northwestern since 1970. Breen’s major books include The Character of the Good Ruler: A Study of Puritan Political Ideas in New England (1974); Puritans and Adventurers: Change and Persistence in Early America (1980); Tobacco Culture: The Mentality of the Great Tidewater Planters on the Eve of Revolution (1985); and, with Stephen Innes of the University of Virginia, “Myne Owne Ground”: Race and Freedom on Virginia’s Eastern Shore (1980). His Imagining the Past (1989) won the 1990 Historic Preservation Book Award. His most recent book is Marketplace of Revolution: How Consumer Politics Shaped American Independence (2004). Hal Williams is professor of history at Southern Methodist University. He received his A.B. from Prince­ ton Uni­ versity in 1963 and his Ph.D. from Yale Uni­ versity in 1968. His books include The Democratic Party and California Politics, 1880–1896 (1973); Years of Decision: American Politics in the 1890s (1978); and The Manhattan Project: A Documentary Introduction to the Atomic Age (1990). A specialist in American political history, he taught at Yale University from 1968 to 1975 and came to SMU in 1975 as chair of the Department of History. From 1980 to 1988, he served as dean of Dedman College, the school of humanities and sciences, at SMU, where he is currently dean of Research and Graduate Studies. In 1980, he was a visiting professor at University College, Oxford University. Williams has received grants from the American Philosophical Society and the National Endowment for the Humanities, and he has served on the Texas Committee for the Humanities. He is currently working on a study of the presidential election of 1896 and a biography of James G. Blaine, the late-nineteenth-century speaker of the House, secretary of state, and Republican presidential candidate.   Ariela J. Gross Ariela J. Gross is Professor of Law and History at the University of Southern Cali­ fornia. She received her B.A. from Harvard University, her J.D. from Stanford Law School, and her Ph.D. from Stanford University. She is the author of Double Character: Slavery and Mastery in the Antebellum Southern Courtroom (2000) and ­ numerous law review articles and book chapters, including “‘Caucasian Cloak’: Mexican Americans and the Politics of Whiteness in the Twentieth-Century Southwest” in the Georgetown Law Journal (2006). Her current work in progress, What Blood Won’t Tell: Racial Identity on Trial in America, to be published by Farrar, Straus & Giroux, is supported by fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the American Council for Learned Societies.   H.W. Brands Henry William Brands was born in Oregon, went to college in California, sold cutlery across the American West, and earned graduate degrees in mathematics and history in Oregon and Texas. Kelly Shea Welch teaches in the School of Family Studies and Human Services at Kansas State University.  A native of Kansas, she received her Ph.D. in Family Studies at Kansas State University after working for many years as a doula, a professional birth attendant who provides emotional, physical, and informational support to the childbearing woman and her partner.  Still today her research interests marry women’s health issues with family studies.  Over the past 10 years, she has taught the large, introductory human growth and development course which enrolls a little more than 1,000 students per semester.  The author of the interactive learning CD Roms, Development: Journey of a Lifetime, and Development: Journey through Childhood and Adolescence, she recognizes and emphasizes the value of active and learner-centered pedagogy that allows students to organize, integrate, and generate knowledge.  In addition to teaching the human growth and development course, she also teaches the Family Relationships class that enrolls approximately 300 students each semester.  She is a recipient of numerous teaching awards, including the Presidential Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching, and nominations for the United States Professor of the Year and the United States Distance Educator of the Year.  These teaching awards and nominations recognize her distinct, innovative, and energetic teaching style—students consistently indicate that this unique teaching style puts them “on the edge” of their seats and holds their attention.

So this was the required text for my History class: US History from 1877. Its a survey class so we don't delve too deep into any one topic, neither does the text, which I appreciate because there is little to filter through and not a lot to skim over. I'm about 6 weeks into the course, and although I think having a really great professor has certainly influenced me, the text is not simply names and dates kind of text book. It appears a lot of time and effort was put into making this text a clear and honest telling of the story of America. As far as a text book goes, I'm impressed.

Good book! This book is supposed to correlate with the myhistorylab. I mistakenly bought this book without the code since I didn't know that I would have needed the code for my class. The information is a little bit hard to look up for the myhistorylab quizzes since sometimes it takes a little bit of reading in between the lines, but despite that, this book is jammed packed with information.

About the Author
Monica McGoldrick, M.A., M.S.W, Ph.D. (h.c.), is the Director of the Multicultural Family Institute in Highland Park, NJ, and on Psychiatry Faculty of the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. Her other books include: Ethnicity and Family Therapy, 3rd ed; Genograms: Assessment and Intervention, 3rd ed. Living Beyond Loss: 2nd ed; Revisioning Family Therapy: Race, Culture, and Gender in Clinical Practice, 2nd ed; and The Genogram Journey: Reconnecting with your Family- to be published by W. W. Norton in the Fall of 2010,whichtranslates her ideas about family relationships for a popular audience, using examples such as Beethoven, Groucho Marx, Sigmund Freud and the Kennedys. She received her BA from Brown University, a Masters in Russian Studies from Yale University, and her M.S.W and an Honorary Doctorate from Smith College School for Social Work. Dr. McGoldrick is known internationally for her writings and teaching on topics including culture, class, gender, loss, family patterns (genograms), remarried families, and sibling relationships. Her clinical videotape demonstrating the use of the life cycle perspective with a multicultural remarried family dealing with issues of unresolved mourning has become one of the most widely respected videotapes available in the field. Betty Carter, M.S.W., founder and Director Emerita (1977-1997) of the Family Institute of Westchester in White Plains, New York, spent over 30 years as a family therapy clinician, supervisor, teacher, and director of a major training institute. She received awards from the American Family Therapy Academy, Hunter College School of Social work, and the American Association of marriage and Family Therapy Research and Education Foundation. With her colleagues Peggy Papp, Olga Silverstein and Marianne Walters she co-founded the Women's Project in Family Therapy, which promoted a feminist revisioning of family therapy and received awards from both the Family Therapy Academy and the AAMFT. Their work culminated in a book on gender-sensitive family therapy practice: The Invisible Web: Gender Patterns in Family Therapy Relationships. In 1996 Betty Carter authored a trade book on couples, Love, Honor and Negotiate: Building Partnerships That Last a Lifetime. She published numerous professional book chapters and journal articles, along with educational videotapes produced by Steve Lerner for Guilford Press. Married to her husband Sam, a musician, for over 50 years, Betty has two sons and three grandchildren. She has said that of all her ideas she always loved the family life cycle framework most "because it contains all the other ideas and has room for more." Nydia Garcia-Preto, M.S.W., is the Associate Director at the Multicultural Family Institute in Highland Pk., NJ where she also has a Private Practice. Ms. Garcia-Preto was formerly a Visiting Professor at the Rutgers Graduate School of Social Work, and for many years the Director of the Adolescent Day Hospital, at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. She received her MSW from Rutgers Graduate School of Social Work and her BA in Sociology at Rider College. A highly respected family therapist, author, and teacher, and organizational trainer, she has publications in textbooks and journals on issues of cultural competence, Puerto Rican and Latino families, Latinas, immigration, ethnic intermarriage, and families with adolescents. She is co-editor of the most recent edition of Ethnicity and Family Therapy. Ms. Garcia-Preto received the Frantz Fanon, M.D. Award from the Post Graduate Center for Mental Health for her work Puerto Rican and Latino adolescents and families, and the Social Justice Award from The American Family Therapy Academy. She and her colleagues at MFI have developed many training for many years on multiculturalism in clinical work, and organizational consulting on cultural competence.
